Cement is the binder that governs strength development and working time in concrete and mortar. Small changes in fineness, setting time or volume stability have a marked effect on how a mix behaves on site.
Cement testing determines standard consistence and setting time, the compressive and flexural strength of standard prisms, specific surface and density, and soundness — the measure of uniform volume change after setting.
Testing is carried out when qualifying a new supplier, on delivery of each consignment, and whenever storage conditions cast doubt on the quality of the material.
The cement tests below are those our laboratory is accredited for under ISO/IEC 17025, certificate LT 069:
- Standard consistence and setting time — consistence 0.1÷35 %, setting time ≥ 45 min — BS EN 196-3:2016
- Compressive and flexural strength — flexural 0.5÷15 MPa, compressive 1÷88 MPa — BS EN 196-1:2016
- Specific surface and density — ≤ 5000 cm²/g; 3÷3.5 g/cm³ — BS EN 196-6:2018; ASTM C204-23
- Soundness (expansion) — ≤ 10 mm — BS EN 196-3:2016
