Laboratory · Masonry units

The strength of a load-bearing wall starts with the unit. Compressive strength, density and absorption of bricks and blocks feed directly into wall design and into how well render and mortar bond.

All four tests are accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 (DPA certificate LT 069) for clay, calcium-silicate and concrete units.

When you need these tests

  • Producers declaring properties for CE marking.
  • Load-bearing masonry where the design assumes a unit strength.
  • Checking deliveries on site, or units in an existing building before assessment.

Accredited tests and standards

Clay, calcium-silicate and concrete units

Test What it tells you Range Standard Where
Compressive strength Declared compressive strength of the unit for wall design 1–88 MPa BS EN 772-1:2011+A1:2015 On site
Net and gross dry density (clay, calcium silicate, concrete units) Density of clay, calcium-silicate and concrete units 500–2500 kg/m³ BS EN 772-13:2000 On site
Water absorption Water absorption, linked to durability and render adhesion 0.1–30% BS EN 772-21:2011 On site
Dimensions of masonry units Checks units against declared dimensions and tolerances 0.1–500 mm BS EN 772-16:2011 On site

Sampling and what to send us

  • At least 6–10 whole units from the same batch, depending on the tests.
  • The declared strength and density from the producer, if available.

What your test report contains

  • A unique report number, the accredited laboratory’s details and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation mark for accredited tests.
  • Sample identification, sampling details and the condition of the sample on receipt.
  • The standard and method used for every test, with any deviation stated.
  • Results with units, and comparison with the specified limits when you give them to us.
  • Signature of the authorised laboratory staff.

Frequently asked questions

Do you test existing walls?

Yes. Units removed from an existing building can be tested for strength and density as part of a seismic assessment.
