Aggregates — sand, gravel and crushed stone — make up roughly 70–80 % of the volume of concrete and the bulk of an asphalt mixture. Their physical and mechanical properties directly govern the workability, strength and service life of the final material.

Aggregate testing verifies grading, particle shape, density, water absorption and resistance to wear and weathering. These figures are needed to confirm compliance with project specifications and to design a concrete or asphalt mix that performs as intended.

Testing is normally carried out before the material enters production — when qualifying a new quarry or supplier — and then periodically as production control.

The aggregate tests below are those our laboratory is accredited for under ISO/IEC 17025, certificate LT 069:
